Name: DuPont Corporation
DuPont corp may have played a key role in Hemp's prohibition. They stood to lose millions in their nascent polymer plastics business which was in direct competition to Hemp. Anslinger's Uncle in Law, Andrew Mellon, was DuPont's banker. Shortly after Hemp was made illegal, DuPont's plastic fibers came onto the market to fill the void. DuPont 1937 Annual Report: "The revenue raising power of government may be converted into an instrument for forcing acceptance of sudden new ideas of industrial and social reorganization".
DuPont invented the CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) which depleted the ozone layer and acted as a synthetic greenhouse super-gas. After decades of controversy they finally announced they were ceasing CFC production in 1988 but kept selling CFCs until 1995.
Researchers at the Political Economy Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts Amherst ranked DuPont as the largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States. Their latest chemical assault comes in the form of PFOA which has been found in elevated levels in humans living near the Washington, West Virginia plant. To be phased out by 2015. Take your time guys...
Motivation for helping outlaw Hemp:
